(Drawing of Emma Lazarus.)
Commissioned by Ma'yan, 2001
Women of Valor was a commission by the Jewish Women’s Archive to celebrate historical women in Judaism who made a great difference in our society. The Archive gave Swados a list of the women they wanted (including Anne Waldman who founded the Henry Street Settlement, Madam Alexander who was a highly successful doll maker and businesswoman, Emma Lazarus, various suffragettes, and more modern women including Bella Abzug) and she did the research and put together this song cycle.
